How to bounce back from failure and setbacks to claim the glory you desire

For many sports fans all over the world, the name on everyone’s lip at the moment is no other but Tiger Woods- a man who the BBC tagged as possibly the greatest comeback in sports history.

On Sunday 14th of April, 2019, Tiger woods clinched his 15th major trophy and while I watched the crowd applaud him, I couldn’t help but notice the Nike logo on his shirt and face cap. All of a sudden, my mind went back to late 2009 when he was involved in a scandal that not only impacted him economically but also maritally.  The reason for this was because back in 2009 Tiger was accused of infidelity and as a result of this, lost so many endorsements with a number of the big brands like GM Motors, Accenture, Gatorade and rightly so given that no brand was willing to take the risk of damaging their reputation through their association with Tiger Woods. Mind you, this was a man dubbed to be the highest earning American athlete, Business Insider in 2010 reported that as a result of his infidelity, Tiger Woods lost $22 Million in endorsement but yet Nike chose to remain.

Why did Nike chose to remain with him? Why would they want to stick out their neck for a man who had done such a horrible thing? Are there no better sports men in golf to endorse? Why Tiger Woods?

These are the questions that propelled me in writing this post.

You see, I am Christian by faith and as such a big believer in second chances. Although I don’t condone what was done, however, I do believe that as individuals, we should never give up on people so easily. It was Ralph Waldo Emerson who said “Treat a man as he is, and he will remain as he is. Treat a man as he could be, and he will become what he should be.” As a matter of fact, I saw a post on Facebook where some made the statement along the lines of “What is wrong with people these days, it seems like the world forgives and forgets easily”.

Tiger Woods last major trophy was in 2008 making it almost 11 years since He last received the green blazer. In 2017, according to NBC News Tiger was arrested for DUI (Driving Under The Influence) after which it was suggested that found in his system were 5 drug substances which included pain killers, sleep drugs and some ingredients of marijuana. One may begin to question how someone who had it going so good at some point could spiral downwards in such a short time but the fact remains that except you are found in such a situation, you may never know. Also alongside his marital breakdown included spells of injuries including a major knee injury. Someone once said that “You can never let success outside compensate for failure at home”, I guess with Tiger, it was a case of failure at home affecting the success outside.

The Comeback

I read an article that attributed this recent success to the three women in Tiger’s life- women in this case being his ex wife, his mother and his current girlfriend who were rather inspirational and not scandalous. So how then can anyone like Tiger Woods discover their “Tiger” and make that comeback back at life? Here are my suggestions

1. It starts with “You”

Until you realise that the very first change starts with you, then no one will be willing to provide the help needed. You not only owe yourself the responsibility of being the best version of yourself but also to the people who are counting on you and most importantly God; bearing in mind that everyone will give an account on how they lived. Someone once said something so profound; He said that “At birth we may look like our parents, but we will all die looking like our decisions”. It is our responsibility to be the change we so desire.

2. Your company matters

According to the article mentioned earlier, it was Tiger Woods ex wife who said to him that “although you may have failed as a husband, you don’t have to fail as a father”. I won’t be surprised if this was when things turned around for him. Just like Tiger, we must be willing to surround ourselves with people whose desire is to see us better. For me, I have had my fair share of failures but it because I was surrounded with people like my father that I am where I am today. There is always a Nike out there betting on you to win. Do not let them down.

3. Reconnect with your “WHY”

As a our faces and names are different, so must be the reason why we strive to be better, for some it could be their spouses and children, for others it could be a personal sentiment. Regardless of the reason, your “why” must be that reason why you are willing to fight till your last breath. Dr Eric Thomas often says that “Until you are willing to succeed as much as you want to breathe, you won’t be successful”.

Just like Tiger Woods, who today the world has forgotten his failings and are acknowledging him for what he does best- giving his best on the golf course, so also is the world waiting to celebrate you. You may have made the mistake and your urging to quit but always remember that there is greatness within you waiting for expression. DO NOT GIVE UP!

You owe it to yourself to do better, you owe to others to do better and you owe to God to give your best.

Cheers to your greatness.

Have there been times when you felt like quitting but you didn’t and later achieved success? feel free to share in the comments and also share this post with friends and family.
